It’s not that I don’t have time to write, and of course there is the suffocating barrage of societal horrors to wax on. My drafts folder is littered with unedited rants, serving as a catch-all for my weekly thoughts and reactions; often typed with tired eyes after Aidan’s bedtime, a sinkful of dishes, and the evergreen pile of fresh laundry. He’ll be three months old this Friday. Time is flying but the stillness rules. It’s so so good and I’m protecting the bubble like Smaug over a pile of gold.
I don’t want to miss a thing. I’ve noticed myself shy away from creative endeavors so as not to disrupt my experience of normal infancy. He’s still a pill bug, arms and legs waving erratically as he lays down on his back, smiling up at us. He’ll probably laugh any day now. And then crawl, walk, ride, drive, grow a beard, etc… There’s not a parent around that skips an opportunity to remind me how fast it all goes.
I’m finding new paths to explore. Culinary arts. Infant photography. Ambient music. Songs about poop. During years on the road I experienced a great many things that might be considered objectively more exciting than changing diapers, yet I can say with absolute certainty that I’ve never felt more content, more in love, more happy than right now.
So here is a small, cinematic window into the moment. A rainy day in the life. Aidan is exploring his grip. Daron is crafting confections. I’m trying a new recipe, sneaking some footage and composing a new ambient track. The sky clears and one of the most brilliant rainbows I’ve ever seen appears just outside the front door. Puma wakes from her daily midday nap in the crib and seeks out the heat of my recording station.
The idea of The Slowing used to scare me. I was convinced for so long that I would never settle. I hardly recognize the person I used to be when I read his words and see photographs of him, but I’m grateful for his mistakes, his ambition, and his commitment to wonder. So much to show my son, in time.
For now I’m calling the track in the video “Someone Put a Rainbow in the Sky”. I composed and recorded it yesterday throughout the day during naps and after bedtime. I’m sure I’ll keep working on it, and perhaps include it with my next ambient release. Let me know what you think.
I’ve got 6 songs out now, designed to help you sleep, write, meditate, and relax:
